FASTENER HISTORY

November 2, 1984 FIN – The Industrial Fasteners Institute has a new managing director.
Richard B. Belford has retired as managing director and his successor is C.G. (Dick) Scofield formerly director of marketing and government affairs for the Forging Industry Association.

In making the announcement, IFI chairman Donald E. Surber, president of Accurate Threaded Fasteners, Inc., said “Dick Belford has served the Institute and the entire North American Fasteners industry with distinction for more than 34 years. His technical guidance and commitment to developing universally accepted metric fastener standards have established IFI as a major force in international fastener standardization. Through his work as a member of more than 40 national and international technical committees, often as committee chairman or as secretary, Dick Belford has earned the respect and admiration of his peers as a leading authority on mechanical fastening and fastener standards in both North America and the free world.”

Belford first served IFI as technical director, having full responsibility for all IFI and industry-related technical and standard activities. In 1982, following the IFI’s reorganization, he was named managing director.
In that position he has been IFI’s chief executive responsible for overall administration of IFI programs, finances, staff and member support services.
Belford has also directed the current revisions of IFI’s two standards books on inch and metric fasteners.
Belford received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto and following service in the Canadian army and five years in structural engineering, he joined IFI in 1950.

He will continue for a brief period at IFI as counsel for a number of in-progress projects.

Editor’s Note: We here at FIN have benefited greatly from Dick Belford’s help with technical arcana that was beyond our scope. We’re sure that all our readers join FIN in congratulating him on a difficult job well done and wish him continued success and best wishes for the future.

IFI, founded in 1931, is an association of the leading North American manufacturers of bolts, nuts, screws, rivets and all types of industrial fasteners and formed parts. ©1984/2010 Fastener Industry News.
