April 25, 1980 FIN – Can you list three similarities shared by donuts and washers? If you can, you can win a dozen donuts courtesy of your local Garrett/Joliet fastener distributor.

That’s the message being carried in some splashy four-color ads being carried in such publications as Purchasing, Purchasing World as well as some 19 regional purchasing magazines.

FIN contacted William W. Vogel, sales manager of both Garrett Div. Of MSL (Philadelphia, PA, and Joliet Wrought Washer, (Joliet, Ill) and got some particulars of this somewhat usual marketing approach.

He told us that the dozen donuts premium is part of a new program designed to expand distributor inventory turns.

As part of this program there’s an audio visual presentation showing them how to sell washers.

As for the donuts, each of the approximately 450 distributors are provided with certificates good for a dozen of them at any Dunkin Donut store in their area.

Some 20,000 certificates have been printed up.

Along with these Garrett/Joliet have initiated a 48-hour delivery program.

If you’re not familiar with the companies, Garrett Div. And Joliet Wrought Washers are both manufacturers of washers, the former producing flat washers, lock washers, spring washers and USS, SAE and round structurals. The latter specializes in flat washers.
Overall, there’s an overlap of about 60% in products.

Both are separate companies within the MSL Industries but about eight months ago, according to Vogel, they joined the sales and marketing groups. Each salesman, in other words, carries two cards.

Sister companies within MSL Industries also involved with fasteners are Hunter Stevens, River Grove, ILL, which makes socket screws and Heads and Threads, Northbrook, ILL, one of the country’s largest importers of fasteners. Garrett is located at 8901 N. Torresdale Ave., Philadelphia.
