FASTENER HISTORY
1988, 1996 & 1997 FIN – NIFS Partners Attempt OEM Shows

January 27, 1988 FIN – A fastener exposition and conference which will showcase the products of fastener manufacturers who sell direct to original equipment manufacturers will be held November 16-17, 1988, in the Cleveland Convention Center.

Co-founders of this “first annual” OEM Fastening Expo & Conference are Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire who, since 1981, have been running the National Industrial Fastener Show & Conference in Columbus, Ohio.
The Columbus show, from which OEMs are excluded, has as exhibitors manufacturers, importers, and master distributors and is aimed at distributors who buy from these exhibitors.

According to Bannister, whose group, Bannister & Associates, will be managing the Cleveland show, and McGuire, whose company, Buckeye Industrial Sales, publishes Fastener Journal and various fastener guides, the new Cleveland exposition and conference “is strictly an OEM show.”
Exhibitors, they say, will be “those manufacturers who sell direct to OEMs, and the attendees will be those ‘decision makers’ who recommend, specify, and buy fastener products, services, and systems for use in their manufacturing process.”

What constitutes “fastening products, services, systems, and technologies” has been rather broadly interpreted to include “adhesives, anerobics, applicators, clamps, fasteners, fittings, gaskets, glue, hot melt, latches, nails, plastic clamps, riveting systems, springs, staples, tools and bits, welding wire, and more.”

The OEM Expo, according to its promoters, will feature up to 200 exhibits and a number of companies have already reserved space.
These exhibitors now include, AVK Industrial Products, Valencia, CA; Bee Industries, Watertown, IW; Buckeye Industrial Sales Co., Powell, OH; Gates Washer & Mfg. Co., Chicago, IL; Holo-Krome Co., West Hartford, CT; Long-Lok Fasteners Corp., Cincinnati, OH; Metric Screw & Tool Co., Wakefield MA; Miniature Nut & Screw Corp., Newington, CT; MNP Corp., Utica, MI; Nord-Lock Division of Lake Michigan Wire & Chain, Muskegon, MI; Ohio Nut & Bolt Co., Berea, OH; RB&W Corp., Mentor, OH; Ramco Specialties, Inc., Hudson, OH; Rock River Fastener Corp., Rockford, IL; and Wrought Washer Mfg., Inc., Milwaukee, WI.

November 12, 1996 FIN – The Fastening Design & Application Engineering Expo & Technical Conference was inaugurated in October with attendance numbers, which disappointed many exhibitors.

According to show promoters Jim Bannister and Mike McGuire there were 591 registrants – including advance and onsite registrations – plus 339 exhibit personnel. The totals include 193 engineers, 86 management level people, 80 from the fastener industry, 27 from purchasing, 24 in research and 114 “others.”

McGuire told FIN that one problem was that the fastener engineering conference was held on Monday and many attendees didn’t take a second day away from work for the Tuesday/Wednesday trade show.
At the end of the day show manager Gloria Crase announced over the loudspeaker that show management “will be listening to suggestions” from exhibitors to make the 1997 event more successful.

June 27, 1997 FIN – The second Fastening Design & Application Engineering Expo & Technical Conference will return to the Novi Expo Center in suburban Detroit October 23-24, 1997.

The show is designed for fastener manufacturers to present exhibits for OEM engineers and buyers.

Technical sessions will run concurrent with the first day of exhibits instead of the day before as in 1996. This is part of show management’s goal of tripling attendance this year.
“With our considerably larger advertising and promotion budget, we know we will attract a much larger share of the market with this year’s promotional efforts,” marketing manager Kevin Thompson said.
Show manager Melissa Brownfield said nearly 50% of the exhibit space is reserved.

The technical sessions will include education seminars, hands-on demonstrations and discussion groups to address application, design and engineering problems. ©1997/2009 Fastener Industry News.

Editor’s Note: The Fastening Show was discontinued after similar results for 1997.
