1999 FIN – Perspective: More Steps to Paperless Fastener Companies

September 30, 1999 FIN – In 1996 Richard Desormeau entered the fastener source guide business with his 350 pages of paper in a hardcover book, infastGuide.
This month he is introducing his second edition. But this time it is a paperless CD-Rom version.
“Even before the original book was released I was getting requests for a CD-Rom version,” Desormeau recalled from the 1996 National Industrial Fastener Show.

The CD-Rom fastener source guide is one more step away from paper in fastener offices.

• Fastener companies are being featured in Internet articles

• The Industrial Fasteners Institute released the third edition of its Metric Fastener Standards earlier this year in the traditional hardcover book (See FIN August 2, 1999) But the IFI is planning to release a CD-Rom version next year.

The new ifastGuide lists 3,754 manufacturers and importers from more than 35 countries. It includes 1,754 types of inch and metric fasteners, plus 1,650 trademarks, identification symbols and head marking.

Not only is the new ifastGuide on CD-Rom instead of on 350 pages of paper in a book but it incorporates another step toward a paperless society: This edition includes more than 2,500 Internet addresses.

Desormeau said he gets a few requests for a new book, but probably not enough to justify the publishing costs.

“I won’t say I won’t someday print a book again,” Desormeau hedged  ©1999/2011 Fastener Industry News
