FASTENER HISTORY
2004 FIN – K-Tech Owners Back in Business as Holbrook

The former owners of K-Tech Mfg are now producing fasteners as Holbrook Mfg., president Gary VanderPoel announced.
Don Kuhns, Bill Collopy and VanderPoel sold K-Tech to Mascotech in 1998 in hopes of continuing 10 years of double-digit growth with the financial backing of the new parent company.
“After three years of harsh cost cutting, plant closing, layoffs and corporate consolidations, the former owners of K-Tech had left the company with the realization that bigger is not always better,” Holbrook CEO Kuhns explained.
Kuhns described the goal as re-creating a QS 9000 company that has all the capability of a large manufacturer but the talent and responsiveness of an experienced owner-operated shop.
Holbrook starts with 50 employees who have an average of 20 years of fastener experience.
Holbrook has an 80,000 sq ft plant in Wheeling, IL, with more than 40 cold headers and automatic screw machines, shavers and drillers. Holbrook carries inventory and has special tooling and a tool room with wire EDM capability, executive vice president of operations Collopy noted. Holbrook operates a wireless distribution center with real- time bar-coded inventory, lot traceability and automated packaging lines. Proprietary products include Torx, Taptite, Plastite, Remform, ACR Phillips, Phillips Square-Drive, Phillips Mortorq Spiral Drive System and sems.
Brad Yerkes, who was national sales manager for K-Tech, returns as vice president of sales.
