Steel Prices Subject of IFE Speech
Steel prices and production will be the keynote topic at the International Fastener & Precision Formed Parts Manufacturing Exposition. Jo Isenberg-O’Loughlin, editor of American Metal Market, will be the keynote speaker in the IFE seminar series.
IFE will be held April 27-30, 2009, at the I-X Center in Cleveland, in conjunction with Interwire.
Isenberg-O’Loughlin will speak on steel pricing and production in the current climate of frozen credit and ailing markets. The session, titled “Anchored Down or About to Bolt? Steel Prices Come Down to Earth…for Now,” will examine potential pricing patterns for carbon, stainless and alloy steel prices. With mill capacity utilization and steel output at a fraction of year-ago levels, are the markets headed for a deeper dip or an unexpected upward spike? Steel pricing issues will be explored within the context of the Obama stimulus plan, “Buy America” initiatives and distress in Detroit.
Isenberg-O’Loughlin has spent three decades covering steel, other metals and process industries as a trade journalist. She oversees the AMM daily operation.
IFE is held biennially in odd-numbered years for fastener machinery and services to exhibit to fastener manufacturers. Six Seminars for Fastener Tech ’09
Metrics, manufacturing, print reading, teat treating, metal finishing and fastener quality are seminar topics as part of the June 8-10, 2009 Fastener Tech 09.
Seminar sponsors and topics are: Fastener Training Institute, advance metrics and print reading; Fastener Technology International, manufacturing fundamentals, cold forming and thread rolling machinery and tooling; ASM Heat Treating Society, heat treating grade 5, 8 & high-strength steel fasteners; Chicago Metal Finishers Institute, metal finishing; Industrial Fastener Institute, fastener quality.
“Each of these groups specializes in different areas to allow FastenerTech ’09 to provide education pertaining to many segments of the fastener industry,” Mid-West Fastener Association executive director Nancy Rich pointed out. “While the exhibits are a major part of Fastener Tech 09, a very important aspect of this event is the many seminars offered.”
Rich also noted that the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont is near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport with its major airline hubs. “Travel to Chicago is simple,” Rich said.
With the cancellation of the 2009 National Industrial Fastener Show/East in Columbus, FastenerTech is the only Midwest show this year.
Fastener Tech is designed for manufacturers, distributors, buyers and users. The program includes MWFA’s traditional “bash” reception for networking.

NIFS to Publish Exhibitor Articles
The National Industrial Fastener Show in May will begin publishing a series of six exhibitor training articles.
Show management reported 428 companies totaling 560 booths are under contract for the November 16-18, 2009, NIFS/West at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
Show manager Susan Hurley described the booth sales as “surprisingly good and very encouraging.” Hurley added that some companies are waiting for first quarter sales before deciding on booth space. “We believe that once the economy begins recovering, fastener inventories will decline and we should see an increase in orders.”
Show management cited the economy in canceling the 2009 NIFS/East, which was scheduled for May in Columbus, OH.
The NIFS/West floor plan showing company and booth locations is available on the website: fastenershows.com.

Ramsdale announced more than 400 exhibiting companies have reserved space. The total square meters of space already exceeds 2007 and Ramsdale predicted the show will exceed the previous show’s 435 exhibitors total.
