MEDIA SPOTLIGHT – Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings was honored by the Simi Valley city council for Alcoa’s 125th anniversary and its community participation since acquiring Fairchild Fasteners.

The city council’s resolution recognizes Charles Martin Hall’s 1886 innovation turning aluminum into a more useful, cost-effective material, according to the Simi Valley Acorn. That has led to advances for the automotive, aerospace, electronics and construction industries.

“In 1888, Hall opened the doors of Pittsburgh Reduction Company, which in 1907 became the Aluminum Company of America—Alcoa for short. Over the last 127 years, the company has grown to become a leader in lightweight metals technology, engineering and manufacturing,” Acorn reporter Melissa Simon wrote.

Alcoa Fastening Systems & Rings has operated a distribution and logistics center in Simi Valley for a decade after acquiring Fairchild Fasteners, which had been established in 1936 to develop fasteners for the aerospace market and later expanded into the automotive industry after World War II, the Acorn reported.

“We enable smart buildings; sustainable food and beverage packaging; high-performance defense vehicles across air, land and sea; deeper oil and gas drilling; and more efficient power generation,” said James Vigdor, Alcoa’s Simi Valley operations manager.

While the milestone occurred in 2013, the Simi Valley city council passed the resolution this March.

“Alcoa has been such an impactful part of U.S. history in so many ways, and to have a worldclass organization like that in our city is amazing,” Mayor Bob Huber told the Acorn. “As a community, we really appreciate everything they’ve done. They don’t just talk the talk; they actually walk the walk and follow through on what they say.”

That includes volunteerism and philanthropy.

Vigdor told the Acorn that Alcoa is proud of “what the company has brought to Simi Valley, and we are honored to receive such an acknowledgement from our city for all our employees who work hard day after day and volunteer in the community. We are glad to be a good community partner with the City of Simi Valley, working together to improve the lives of our employees and the people and organizations we work with.”

Since coming to Simi 10 years ago, Alcoa has made more than $650,000 in donations to local organizations. The company has invested more than $590 million since 1952 to improve the environment and educate future leaders.

Chamber of Commerce president Leigh Nixon noted the chamber gave Alcoa its Legacy Award in 2006, making it just the second time the honor was handed out in the past 50 years.

Headquartered in New York, Alcoa has 200 locations in 30 countries with 59,000 employees.
