1991 FIN – Fastener Services Inc. Sets Up Maquiladora Joint Ventures in Mexico

September 16, 1991 FIN – Fastener Services Inc., Livonia, Michigan, has formed a joint venture with a Mexican corporation called Intermart, to service the U.S. companies located in Mexico and U.S.-Mexico border town areas. These “maquiladora” companies as they are called, need efficient methods to handle their Class “C” (small part) inventories. This joint venture will utilize the “Purchased Parts Systems” inventory management program, developed by FSI and the seven U.S. corporations included under the FSI umbrella. Named PPS/Intermart, the first location opened September 3, 1991 in the El Paso / Juarez, Mexico maquilador market. A second location in the San Diego, California / Tijuana, Mexico market will open during the first half of 1992. “Intermart brings to the table in-depth knowledge of duty, trade and tariff obligations, Mexican political and corporate realities and a firm understanding of maquiladora needs,” FSI president Michael Turnbull told FIN.
“When you combine that background with FSI’s inventory management capabilities, the fact that our corporate philosophies and people seem capatible and the explosion of growth in this market, a mutually beneficial partnership is assured.” Dick Snyder, a fifteen-year veteran with FSI’s Tri-West Products in Detroit, Michigan has relocated to El Paso, Texas and will serve as general manager of both the El Paso and Juarez operations. ©1991/2009 Fastener Industry News.
