Fastener companies continued the slowdown of spending on capital expenditures that started in 1999. The index was at 3.6 for 1998, dropped to 3.4 for 1999 and went down again for 2000 to 3.2.
If the projected rate holds true for 2001, capital expenditures will drop 0.2 for the third year in a row to end at 3.0.
Last years 3.2 was the lowest in the seven years of the index.
Manufacturers reported 2000 capital expenditures at 3.3, compared with distributors at 3.2. However, manufacturers forecast just 2.7 for 2001, while distributors anticipate a 3.1 level.\
