Media Spotlight – Fastener manufacturer Aldo Magazzeni is returning to Kenya in September to complete work on a water system for a drought-stricken area, phillyBurbs.com reported.

Magazzeni is a partner at Champion Fasteners.

Magazzeni has seen suffering firsthand: in Haiti, Afghanistan and Kenya.

In addition to his fastener role, Magazzeni, 60, is a founder and officer of Traveling Mercies, a nonprofit charity that helps build water systems in the Third World.

“This is such a wonderful project, because, as all projects that Traveling Mercies has participated in, this is a community-based solution,” Magazzeni, a native of Italy, told reporter Chris Bishop of phillyBurbs.com.

Magazzeni will return to Kenya in September and will stay until the $60,000 project, which started about six months ago, is finished.  He still needs to raise $20,000 to complete the project.

Called the Syokithumbi Farmers Self Help, the water project is located in southeast Kenya about a three-hour drive east of Nairobi. Today residents don’t have enough water to drink, bathe or grow food.

About 60%  of the work is done, he said, adding that the initiative will include about 20 small villages with about 100 families and more than 800 people.

The project includes a water well, storage building, greenhouse and farming arrangement that will grow food on 25 acres using drip irrigation. Due to a lack of electricity, a solar power system will be installed.

When the Kenya project is complete, Magazzeni will move on to another – possibly in Sudan. “He has installed water systems in one of the most dangerous areas of the world, Afghanistan, and said he is not afraid to go back,” Bishop reported. Web: travelingmercies.org
