Each day countless billions of mechanical fasteners perform their functions flawlessly. Unfortunately, it’s the few flawed ones that get all the media attention.
In recent weeks the general public has heard a lot about fasteners.

Most prominently is the story involving the Oakland Bay Bridge bolts that snapped within days of being tensioned. The story continues to get major media attention as bridge officials determine whether the remaining bolts on the bridge should be replaced before the structure opens to the public.

But fastener ink hasn’t been limited to bridge bolts.

An acute fastener shortage is a permanent part of the Boeing 787 story, getting mentioned whenever the Dreamliner’s woes are chronicled. Along with shortages, machinists have battled problems related to mechanically joining composite sections of the aircraft.

On a positive note, China’s recent investment in 21st century rail infrastructure has helped companies such as the Vossloh Group produce stunning results within their fastener businesses.
