Gemcor Expanding NY Plant; Opens Technical Service JV in China

Gemcor announced an expansion of its suburban Buffalo, NY facility and opened a joint venture office located in Beijing, China. The 50/50 JV was formed with the AVIC Beijing Aeronautical Manufacturing Technology Research Institute (BAMTRI).

Avic – Gemcor Automatic Riveting Technical Service Co., Ltd. will provide local after-sales technical service for Gemcor’s customer base in China. The JV will also carry spare parts for use during warranty periods and routine maintenance.
“As our installation base continues to grow in China, it is important we have the infrastructure in place to support these important customers,” Gemcor CEO William Mangus explained.

Gemcor has been supplying its automatic fastening systems used in the manufacture of aircraft to China for more than 20 years. The market has been growing due to increased manufacturing of airframe assemblies for such companies as Boeing, Airbus, Embraer and Bombardier. China is introducing its own C919 single aisle domestic passenger aircraft.

Allen (Pete) Grum of Rand Capital Corporation, which holds 7.14% of Gemcor stock, noted Gemcor’s continued growth “is a result of their significant time and investment in the China market for many years. The opening of a JV in China was part of their strategic initiatives and recognition at the importance of Chinese customers.”

In the past four years, China has accounted for an average 40% of Gemcor sales.

Gemcor’s fastening systems are engineered and manufactured in the U.S. Their systems are used to fasten or rivet the skin to aircraft. Gemcor ships systems to the U.S., Japan, Brazil, Russia and Europe.

Gemcor was founded in 1937 by Thomas Speller Sr., who was named “Father of Automatic Fastening” by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. An annual award in Speller’s name recognizes achievement in the aerospace automated fastening manufacturing process.

Gemcor moved to its current 80,000 sq ft headquarters plant 1996. The expansion will add 27,000 sq ft. With $583,000 in local tax breaks, the $3.1 million addition will create 11 new jobs by 2013. The company currently employs 55.
Gemcor is a privately held company. Investors include Rand Capital Corporation, Erie Country Industrial Develop Agency, and Cygnus Management Group. Gemcor is headquartered at 100 Gemcor Dr., West Seneca, NY 14224. Tel: 716 674-6300 Fax 674-3171 Web: gemcor.com ©2011 GlobalFastenerNews.com
